New Rule Introduced By the UK Government for the MOT

Have you ever come across someone who went to get his vehicle’s MOT taken but came back from the test centre without the test being conducted? Well, this is the case of ghost MOT. With the passing of time, the cases of fraud and ghost MOTs have been increasing. Test centres would simply provide the vehicle owners with a passing certificate without conducting the test or not conducting it thoroughly. As these cases have been increasing constantly, the UK government decided to introduce new rules. In this blog, we will be providing you with a detailed breakdown of what the UK government did to deal with this big issue.

Understanding Fraud and Ghost MOTs

MOT passing certificate is a mandatory requirement for your vehicle. If you are driving a vehicle without MOT certificate, then you will be fined, and some cases could even lead to the points being deducted from your driving license. And there are various cases in which your vehicle might fail its MOT Corby as it might not be well maintained. So, to ensure that you have a passing certificate even if the condition of your vehicle is not good, various MOT centres would provide a fake MOT or what the actual term for it is “Ghost MOT”.

These Ghost MOTs can lead to various issues as in this your vehicle is not tested properly and a passing certificate is provided.

Most of the people getting a fake MOT are those who have some kind of issue with their vehicle and know that they are going to fail the test. These cases of ghost MOTs allowed vehicles that are unsafe to drive and are not safe for the environment to be driven on the road. And nothing can be done about that as they have MOT certificate which is the validation that the vehicle is safe for the road as well as the environment. So, to deal with this increasing issue of fake MOTs the United Kingdom made it mandatory for the test centres to upload the photo of the vehicles on the test bay which was the proof the vehicle which is provided with a passing certificate was tested. Now, let’s take a detailed look at how this new rule is helpful for the government.

Capturing Vehicle’s Photo at Test Bay

This new rule of capturing the photo of the vehicle at the test bay by the tester is introduced by the United Kingdom government to deal with the constant increase in the cases of the fake MOT certificates. After the introduction of this rule in 2025, the DVSA which is the body of the United Kingdom government which overlooks MOT asked the MOT testers to click the picture of the vehicle which came to them for testing. Full image should be captured of the vehicle, and it is directed that the photo should be captured when the vehicle is present at the testing bay.

Uploading The Photo Which Is Clicked

Now, if you are tester then you must know that for uploading the photo you will be required a phone or a tablet. Yes, the remaining process of testing can be done through a computer, but the photo will only be considered valid if it is taken with a phone or a tablet. You cannot take one with your computer’s web cam.

After taking the photo, you will be required to upload it on MTS as the photo can only be captured by that. This means if you are thinking that you will use an old photo and upload it on the portal, then this will not work. The photo should be captured on the MTS at the time of testing. The photo can only be clicked after you have entered the vehicle identification number or its registration number. The system will also provide you with all the instructions on what type of photo should you capture and upload.

How Can This New Rule Be Helpful?

You might be wondering how a simple photo help in can dealing with the issue of ghost MOTs. Well, as the images of the vehicle will be captured, it will help in keeping and maintaining the long term record of vehicle along with its visual record. This maintenance of the record will not only allow the vehicles to be recorded but will also help in the identifications of the vehicles which have fake MOT certificates. This will make it mandatory for the Car Servicing in Corby which have turned to MOT centres to conduct the test with complete honesty.
